The Art of the Slow Burn: How to Make Your Coconut Soy Candles Last Longer

Here is how to make every coconut soy candle from Kaprice last as long as it possibly can.

1. Honour the first burn

The most important burn is the very first one. When you light a new candle, let it burn long enough for the melted wax to reach the full edge of the vessel — usually two to four hours. Coconut soy wax has a memory: if you blow it out too early, it “remembers” a small pool and will tunnel straight down on every future burn, wasting wax along the sides. A full first pool sets your candle up to burn evenly for its entire life.

2. Trim the wick before every light

Before you light your candle each time, trim the wick to about 5 mm (¼ inch). A trimmed wick burns calmer, with a smaller, steadier flame — less soot, no mushrooming, and a cleaner scent throw. An untrimmed wick burns hot and fast, shortening your candle’s life.

3. Respect the burn time

Enjoy your candle in sessions of three to four hours, then let it rest. Burning much longer overheats the wax and the vessel and shortens the total life. Our hand-poured candles are crafted for a clean, slow burn of 45–52 hours — paced over several sittings, that is many weeks of atmosphere.

4. Keep it away from draughts

Place your candle away from open windows, fans, and air vents. A flickering flame caused by moving air burns unevenly, creates soot, and uses wax faster. A still, sheltered spot gives you a steady flame and an even melt pool.

5. Store it with care

Between burns, keep the lid on (or store somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight). This protects the fragrance oils from fading and keeps dust off the wax, so each relighting smells as true as the first.
